Protests over Tamil Nadu girl students cleaning toilets, principal suspended

Chennai: A school principal in Tamil Nadu has been suspended after a video showed female students cleaning the school’s toilets.

The incident took place at a school in Palakkodu village of Dharmapuri district where about 150 tribal students from Classes 1 to 8 study, according to NDTV.

Visuals circulating on social media showed girls dressed in school uniforms cleaning toilets using brooms.

Parents and locals protested outside the school demanding investigation into the incident.

Some parents approached the school education department, alleging that the headmistress made children cleaning the toilets, sweeping the premises, and fetching water.

Residents of the village took to the streets holding placards, raising slogans demanding immediate action against the headmistress.

They demanded that students, particularly girls in an educational institution, should not be given such tasks.

The Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Dharmapuri district launched an investigation, and the District Education Officer (DEO) confirmed the suspension of the headmistress.
