Prohibitory orders in Manipur's Ukhrul after Kuki-Naga clash over assault

Ukhrul (Manipur): Authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions Sunday in parts of Ukhrul district following stone-pelting clashes between Kuki-Zo and Tangkhul Naga communities, sparked by an alleged assault on a Naga man.

Tensions ignited Saturday night when the Tangkhul Naga was attacked in Litan village. A planned customary meeting between the victim's family and Litan Sareikhong village chief failed to materialize, escalating matters.

Sunday saw confrontations at Litan, with both sides hurling stones. Security forces fired tear gas to disperse crowds, officials told PTI and The Hindu.

District Magistrate Asish Das invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita from 7 pm Sunday, citing risks to lives and property. The order bans movement outside homes and disruptive activities until further notice. Central forces like Assam Rifles were deployed preventively.

Student groups appealed for peace. The Kuki Students’ Organisation called it a "minor altercation involving intoxicated individuals," urging customary resolution. Tangkhul body Katho Katamnao Long lamented lack of rectification efforts.
