President nominates Justice DY Chandrachud as new chairperson of NALSA

According to a statement from the Law Ministry, Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud has been nominated by President of India Droupadi Murmu to serve as the next executive head of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).

After Justice U.U. Lalit was appointed the 49th Chief Justice of India, Justice Chandrachud assumed the vacancy.

Under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the NALSA was established to offer free legal services to the less fortunate members of society, NIE reported.

The Bar and Bench said that Justice DY Chandrachud of the Supreme Court was formerly the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court as well as a judge of the Bombay High Court.

Justice Chandrachud will succeed CJI Lalit as India's 50th Chief Justice in November 2022 once CJI Lalit retires.
