Pregnant woman in Firozabad passes away after police allegedly kicked her

Firozabad: Following an incident in which police personnel allegedly kicked a pregnant woman while attempting to arrest her husband in connection with a theft case, six police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, were suspended in Firozabad, officials said.

The woman's family said that the Sub-Inspector Dharmpal Singh and a police team reached the residence of 32-year-old Gaurav in Labhaua village of the Shikohabad area around 11.45 pm on Sunday to take him into custody, according to media reports.

The family alleged that Anjali, Gaurav's 28-year-old pregnant wife, requested the police not to arrest her husband. But, Singh allegedly kicked her in the abdomen, after which she fell.

After police took Gaurav away, Anjali's condition reportedly deteriorated and she was admitted to a hospital in Shikohabad. She delivered a baby boy on Monday morning, but her health worsened following the delivery. She was subsequently shifted to a private hospital in Firozabad, where doctors declared her dead, according to her family.

The family claimed that police released Gaurav after being informed of Anjali's death. Following the incident, villagers gathered at the police station and created a commotion, questioning the circumstances surrounding the woman's death and the police action.

The newborn boy was also reported to be in critical condition and was referred to a hospital in Agra for further treatment, the family said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ravi Shankar Prasad said Superintendent of Police Aditya Langhe ordered the immediate suspension of Sub-Inspectors Dharmpal Singh and Satyapal Singh, Head Constables Mohan Singh and Arvind Kumar, and Constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar for negligence.

Prasad said Anjali's post-mortem examination was completed late Monday night and her last rites were conducted the same night. A large police contingent was deployed during the proceedings, he added.
