After the arrest of Goswami on Wednesday by the Mumbai Police, Union ministers in their statements said that the arrest reminded them of the Emergency period imposed by Indira Gandhi. Home minister Amit Shah, Smrithi Irani, Dr.S Jaishankar, Prakash Javedkar and Ravi Shankar Prasad came forward slamming the action of the police.
The arrest was criticised by Amit Shah who called it an absurd misuse of power not only against Arnab Goswami and Republic TV but also against the freedom of press which is the fourth pillar of democracy.
Smriti Irani, minister in the union cabinet tweeted that those who do not stand in support of Arnab Goswami today are in fact supporters of fascism. Minister of Law Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Maharashtra government for the arrest labelling it as a part of the government's revenge politics.
Goswami was arrested on Wednesday by the Mumbai police for allegedly abetting the suicide of an interior designer named Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud back in 2018.
Arnab has currently been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
