Police need high power mission to adopt future tech: PM Modi

Lucknow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for forming a high-powered police technology mission under Home Minister Amit Shah to adopt future technologies for basic police requirements, Time News Networks reported. Addressing the valedictory ceremony of the DGP-IGP annual conference here on Sunday, Modi described the importance of technology in the lives of the general public and gave examples of CoWIN, GeM and UPI.

He further called for an analysis of all police-related incidents and developing case studies so that it would become an institutionalised learning mechanism. While appreciating the police's attitude towards the general public post-pandemic, he suggested the positive use of drone technology for the latter's benefit.

Modi stressed on review of the SMART Policing concept introduced in 2014. He suggested developing a roadmap for continuous transformation and institutionalisation of it in police forces. To solve some of their everyday challenges, he further urged the police to involve highly qualified youth to look for technological solutions through the hackathon. He further suggested a hybrid conference format since it allowed a free flow of information between various ranks. Development of interoperable technologies is needed that would benefit police forces across the country, he added.

According to an Uttar Pradesh Police source, ahead of the conference, various core groups of DGPs were formed for holding discussions on crucial aspects of national security such as prison reforms, terrorism, left-wing extremism, cyber-crimes, narcotics trafficking, foreign funding of NGOs, drone-related matters, and development of border villages.

In the conference, the PM awarded the President's Police Medal for distinguished service to IB personnel. The three-day conference, inaugurated by Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday, was attended by 62 officers of the rank of DGPs and heads of central armed police forces Lucknow. More than 400 officers of various ranks also attended it virtually.
