Poison-laced toffees claim 7-Year-old's life in UP, death toll climbs to 3

Kaushambi: A seven-year-old girl named Versha in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday, after consuming toffees that were found to be poisoned, taking the death toll in the incident to three.

The incident took place at Saurai Buzurg village under the Kada Dham police station of Kaushambi.

On Thursday, two sisters Sadhna (7) and Shalini (4) died after consuming the same poisonous candies. Meanwhile, Versha and another minor Arushi (4), who lived in the neighborhood, were hospitalized.

Superintendent of Police Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said, “The condition of Arushi remains critical.”

According to the police complaint lodged by the father of Sadhna and Shalini, the girls were given the poison-laced toffees by their neighbour, Shiv Shankar.

“Prima facie it appears that the accused had some personal rivalry against the father of the deceased girls. He planted poison-laced toffees to take revenge, he said.

The police lodged an FIR and arrested the accused on Friday. The accused is currently in police custody and the matter is under investigation, the SP added.
