PM Modi meets Egyptian President El-Sisi on sidelines of BRICS Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the latter’s visit to New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit under India’s chairship.
India and Egypt have maintained diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level since August 18, 1947. Egypt became a full member of BRICS in January 2024, alongside Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The meeting took place at Bharat Mandapam on the sidelines of the summit. El-Sisi participated in the two-day BRICS sessions during his visit to India.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty visited India in May 2026 for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and also held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines. Egyptian Justice Minister Mahmoud El-Sherif attended the BRICS Justice Ministers’ Meeting and held talks with Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
El-Sisi had also met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit on Saturday. According to Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Putin welcomed continued progress in bilateral relations and growth in trade between Russia and Egypt. He described Egypt as a “long-standing and reliable friend” and invited El-Sisi to Moscow for the Russia-Africa Summit in October.
On Sunday, BRICS leaders held a session titled “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.”
PM Modi said the trust of Global South nations in BRICS had grown and highlighted initiatives on disaster management, MSME cooperation and the environment. He said India had advanced the spirit of friendship, partnership and cooperation through the BRICS platform.
Modi is also scheduled to meet the leaders of South Africa, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Burundi, Uganda and Nigeria.
