Islamabad: Pakistan on Saturday has introduced a Constitutional amendment to create new position of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) in what reports claimed to make the country’ s armed forces stronger, NDTV reported.
The 27th Constitutional Amendment is aimed at enhancing coordination and command among the country’s the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The bill, presented in the parliament proposing changes to Article 243 of the Constitution, grants Field Marshal Amis Munir greater powers, who will otherwise retire on November 28.
As per the amendment bill, the President will appoint the Army Chief and the Chief of Defence Force on the advice of the Prime Minister.
While the Army Chief, also serving as the Chief of Defence Forces, will appoint the head of the National Strategic Command from within the Pakistan Army consulting with the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile Prime Minister’s administration has claimed that amendment would not ‘endanger democracy’ responding obviously to the criticism that Pakistan army holds the reins of the government.
The amendment will give the government powers to elevate military offices to the ranks of Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force and Admiral of the Fleet with particularly the title of Field Marshal will be given for life.
Thus getting promoted to that position will mean enjoying the privileges of the rank throughout the life.
Just as the changes come in force, the post of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee will be abolished on November 27.
The amendment to ehance coordination and command among the country’s the Army, Navy, and Air Force comes after Pakistan’s failure in India’s Operation Sindoor.
After the ceasefire, Asim Munir was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, making him the second officer in Pakistan’s history to get the title after Ayub Khan who conferred it upon himself in 1959 after seizing power through a military coup.
