New Delhi: National capital of India has been repeatedly reporting incidents of rape over the years. A report by IANS said 1,100 women were raped in the first six months of rape.
This includes the attack on a 13-year-old girl who was gang raped by eight people including a juvenile. The child was abducted by three people who sedated and raped her. They passed her on to more people. She was missing for a week before being found in traumatised state at the Saket Metro station.
The gruesome attack is not an isolated incident.
IANS report shows that crime against women in Delhi is on an upward trajectory when compared to last year's data. There has been an increase of 6.48% since last year.
Despite the government and police officials saying women's safety is their topmost priority, the crime of assault on women with the intent to outrage her modesty is also increasing. This year, till July 15, 1,480 such cases have been registered when compared to the 1,244 cases in 2021.
Another upsetting figure is in terms of kidnapping. 2,197 women have been abducted in the national capital so far. Last year, 1,880 women were kidnapped in the first six months of the year. By the time 2021 ended, the number rose to 3,758.
The report noted that the number of cases regarding cruelty by husbands or in-laws also increased by nearly 30%. This year, 2,704 such cases have been registered. Last year, the figure stood at 2,096.
Experts say that crime against women has increased by 17% in Delhi.
