Over 1.8 Lakh Visas Issued to Indian Citizens by China in 2023

The Chinese embassy in India has reported the issuance of more than 180,000 visas to Indian citizens throughout the year 2023.

The disclosure came from Wang Xiaojian, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, during a recent statement.

Wang Xiaojian expressed the embassy's commitment to enhancing the travel experience for Indian citizens visiting China. A series of measures were implemented, including the removal of online appointment requirements, exemptions for fingerprints, and a temporary reduction in visa fees, reported ANI.

The spokesperson highlighted the collaborative nature of these efforts, hoping for a reciprocal move from India. Xiaojian urged the swift normalisation of visa channels for Chinese citizens travelling to India. Emphasising the importance of fostering mutual people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two nations, the embassy encouraged a prompt resolution.

The backdrop of these developments involves India's suspension of tourist visas for Chinese nationals in the preceding year, as per a circular issued by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The circular, addressed to its member carriers, explicitly stated the ineligibility of tourist visas for nationals of China (People's Republic).

According to the IATA circular, certain categories of individuals remain eligible for entry into India. This includes nationals of Bhutan, India, Maldives, and Nepal, along with passengers holding residence permits, visas, or e-visas issued by India. Additionally, individuals with an overseas citizen of India card or booklet, such as those possessing a Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) card, and those with a diplomatic passport are also allowed entry.

While facilitating travel for specific categories, the circular underscored the invalidity of 10-year tourist visas.
