Pune: The principal of DY Patil High School in Pune, Alexander Coates Reed, was recently assaulted by a group of individuals, including members of the Bajrang Dal, following allegations that he forced students to recite Christian prayers and installed CCTV cameras in the girls' toilet.
However, a fact-finding attempt by Newslaundry has found no evidence to support these claims.
According to the police, there were no instances of forced prayers, and the CCTV cameras were installed in the common areas, not inside the toilets.
The initial complaint filed by a parent primarily focused on her dissatisfaction with her daughter's punishment and the principal's alleged support of the teachers. The parent also expressed concerns about the CCTV cameras but later stated that her complaint was not related to religious issues.
The involvement of the Bajrang Dal added complexity to the situation, but the parent denied contacting them and instead claimed to have confronted the principal with a group of parents. The allegations of religious bias made by the Bajrang Dal were not substantiated.
The parent clarified with the Newslaundry that her complaint centred around the principal's behaviour and the installation of CCTV cameras, refuting any religious bias. The exact motives behind including religious allegations and involving the Bajrang Dal remain unclear.
The police investigation found no evidence of forced prayers or discouragement of Hindu traditions. The principal and teachers denied these allegations, stating that the CCTVs were installed for student safety. Authorities have urged the school staff to come forward and file a complaint regarding the assault.
