In a landmark gesture of recognition, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially declared April 14, 2025, as Dr B.R. Ambedkar Day, celebrating the legacy of the architect of the Indian Constitution and a global icon for human rights.

The announcement was made by Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for the Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, during a special event held at the United Nations headquarters to mark the 134th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.

The event featured a keynote address by India’s Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Ramdas Athawale, who praised Ambedkar’s universal advocacy for justice, equality, and dignity. “His legacy extends far beyond India's borders, making him a symbol of the modern human rights movement,” Athawale said.

Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, born on April 14, 1891, was a pioneering jurist, economist, and social reformer. As the chairman of the Constituent Assembly’s Drafting Committee, he played a critical role in shaping the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar also served as India’s first Law Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet and led powerful movements for the rights of Dalits and other historically oppressed communities.

A Columbia University alumnus, Ambedkar earned his PhD in Economics from the institution in 1927 and later received an honourary degree in 1952. Prior to the UN event, Dr Athawale paid tribute to Ambedkar at his statue in the Lehman Library at Columbia University, calling it “a symbol of knowledge.”

Chauhan emphasised that Ambedkar’s message is especially resonant in New York - a city shaped by immigrants and defined by its belief in opportunity, diversity, and inclusion. “His ideals find a strong voice in the very fabric of our city and in the mission of the United Nations,” he said.

Deelip Mhaske, President of the Foundation for Human Horizon, hailed the proclamation as a profound moment of global recognition. “This is not just a symbolic gesture - it is a moral commitment that positions New York City as a global capital for justice, equality, and civil rights,” Mhaske said.

The proclamation acknowledges Ambedkar’s deep contributions to democracy, gender equality, and social justice. It also reinforces his global relevance as the world works toward achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

“Dr Ambedkar’s life is not just an Indian narrative; it is a universal story of triumph over adversity,” Athawale concluded. “From caste oppression to colonial rule, he overcame every barrier to emerge as a beacon of hope for marginalised communities everywhere.”
