New CJI-led bench to hear RG Kar rape and murder case today

Kolkata: A significant hearing related to the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor from the state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata is set to take place on Tuesday. This marks the first hearing of the case in 33 days and will be presided over by the new Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, with Justice Sanjay Kumar as the second judge on the bench.

The last hearing in the Supreme Court was on November 7, conducted by a three-judge bench comprising then Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra. The matter is now being heard at a time when the trial has already commenced at a special court in Kolkata, proceeding on a fast-track and daily basis.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is scheduled to submit its seventh status report on the investigation to the Supreme Court during Tuesday’s hearing. The CBI’s first charge sheet identified civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the “sole prime accused” in the case. Simultaneously, the investigation is ongoing against Sandip Ghosh, the former and controversial principal of RG Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, the former SHO of Tala Police Station, for allegedly misleading the probe and tampering with evidence during the initial investigation by the Kolkata Police.

On Monday, a special court in Kolkata extended the judicial custody of Ghosh and Mondal until December 13. The CBI counsel informed the court that officials are currently reviewing footage from CCTV cameras installed at RG Kar.

The victim’s body was discovered under suspicious circumstances on the morning of August 9 in the seminar hall of the RG Kar premises.
