Belagavi: The Karnataka Police prevented an attempt to hoist a saffron flag alongside the national Tricolour on the 77th Independence Day celebrations in Belagavi district.
The incident unfolded in Nipani city, where two local corporators, Vinayaka Wade and Sanjaya Sangaovkar, along with their supporters, made an audacious bid to hoist the saffron flag atop the municipality building.
This move came shortly after the BJP local MLA and former minister, Shashikala Jolle, along with the district administration, had raised the Tricolour in a solemn ceremony.
According to sources within the police, the corporators, who were affiliated with the NCP party, arrived at the scene brandishing saffron flags and attempted to hoist them alongside the national flag. This act drew the attention of the assembled crowd and raised concerns about the potential ramifications of the symbolic gesture.
Law enforcement personnel on duty immediately stopped the corporators and their supporters from proceeding any further. After a tense standoff, the police managed to convince the group to withdraw their attempt and peacefully leave the premises.
In a statement issued by the local authorities, it was confirmed that the police acted to maintain law and order and uphold the sanctity of the national flag.
