New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged the Muslim side in the Gyanvapi mosque case to come forward with a solution to what he said the ‘historical mistake’.
Yogi Adityanath was participating an interview with the ANI podcast when he said ‘If we call it a mosque, there will be a dispute’.
His comments came just as the Allahabad High Court is hearing the Mosque committee’s petition challenging a lower court’s order for surveying the site by the Archaeological Survey of India. A ruling on the petition is expected on August 3.
During the interview Yogi wondered what a trishul( trident) was doing inside the mosque, adding that there was a jyotirlinga, dev pratimas (idols) too.
‘The walls are screaming and saying something. I feel there should be a proposal from the Muslim society that there has been a historical mistake and we need a solution,’ the Chief Minister reportedly said.
The Gyanvapi mosque has hogged the headlines since 2021 when a group of Hindu women approached a court in Uttar Pradesh.
They sought permission to worship deities in the Gyanvapi complex sitting close to Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.
During the video survey of the site, as ordered by a lower court, an object was discovered which many claimed it to be shivling.
But the mosque’s management claimed the object was part of the fountain in the wazookhana (pool) for ablution before prayers.
Subsequently, Allahabad High Court dismissed a petition by mosque committee that challenged Hindu side’s request to worship deities inside the premises.
Following this, a lower court directed the ASI to survey the mosque complex, excluding the pool area.
