Dharmasthala: The latest incident of a Muslim auto driver being physically assaulted by a mob for giving a ride to a Hindu woman in Dharmasthala of Dakshina Kannada district underlies the increasing menace of moral policing on the basis of religion and the absence of a stringent law to deal with it.

The 22-year-old Mohammed Ashiq was brutally assaulted by a group of men on the night of Wednesday, August 2. Ashiq had picked up a woman from Ujire and was on his way to the Dharmasthala bus stop when the incident took place.
