New Delhi: Northern Railways has announced that there will be no sale of platform tickets at railway stations in New Delhi, Old Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar and Delhi Sarai Rohilla till November 6.
Railway authorities made the decision anticipating heavy rush of passengers heading home for Diwali and Chhath Puja.
As many as 10 people got injured in a stampede at Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus railway station on Sunday after hundreds of people tried to board a Gorakhpur-bound train.
There was heavy rush as people were trying to head home to join the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals.
However, those coming to help the aged, illiterate and women passengers at the stations are exempted from the restriction, according to the report.
Northern Railways will put in place special crowd management and control measures at New Delhi and Anand Vihar railway stations till November 7.
A press release by Northern Railways said ‘In anticipation of high passenger volumes during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals, the Delhi Division of Northern Railway has implemented special crowd management and control measures at New Delhi Railway Station and Anand Vihar till November 7’.
New Delhi station is reportedly equipped with designated holding area, additional ticket counters, Automatic Ticket Vending Machines and help desk, catering services, drinking water and mobile toilets.
Northern Railways directed passengers to arrive at least an hour before their journey to avoid rush.
