New Delhi: Following the defection of seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs, another member currently in the party and an MP in Rajya Sabha, Sanjay Singh, has accused the Rajya Sabha Secretariat of making “unauthorised” changes to official records and has called for an immediate inquiry into the matter, according to an ANI report.
In a letter to the Rajya Sabha Secretary General, Singh, who leads AAP in the Upper House, flagged what he described as unilateral changes to key details such as the party’s strength and the designation of its floor leader. He has sought clarity on when these changes were made, the grounds on which they were carried out, and who authorised them.
The move comes against the backdrop of a major political shift triggered on April 25, when seven of AAP’s ten Rajya Sabha MPs announced their merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The defectors invoked provisions under the anti-defection law to avoid disqualification, a claim that AAP has strongly contested.
In this context, Singh has also questioned why no prior consultation was held with the party before altering official records, raising concerns over transparency and procedural integrity. He has demanded access to all relevant documents, including orders and communications that led to the changes, and has sought a prompt written response.
While the party has separately moved to challenge the merger and seek disqualification of the MPs, Singh’s latest intervention shifts focus to alleged irregularities within the parliamentary system itself.
By framing the issue as one of institutional accountability, the AAP leadership is signalling a broader challenge, not just to the defections, but to the manner in which official records are being handled.
