MP rape complainant accuses political pressure, consumes poison

New Delhi: A woman who had earlier accused the son of a BJP leader in Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri of rape is in critical condition after allegedly consuming sleeping pills and rat poison.

Police said the woman, who filed an FIR on April 30 against Rajat Sharma, the son of Shivpuri Municipal Council president and BJP leader Gayatri Sharma, was taken to the medical college hospital after her health worsened suddenly. She is currently undergoing treatment under medical supervision, NDTV reported.

Before consuming the poison, the woman reportedly wrote a six-page note in which she claimed she had faced sustained mental harassment and intimidation over the past seven months.

In the note, she reportedly stated that she was writing it while fully conscious and held Gayatri Sharma and her husband, Sanjay Sharma, responsible for pushing her to this state. She claimed that they were aware of her relationship with their son and that Gayatri Sharma had earlier indicated she had no objection and would discuss marriage, the Wire reported.

The woman further alleged that although Rajat Sharma had promised to marry her, his family was simultaneously making arrangements for his engagement elsewhere, which was fixed for April 14, 2025.

She also claimed that she was threatened and verbally abused by Gayatri Sharma, who allegedly told her to learn sacrifice and dedication, and said that Rajat Sharma was present during the incident.

According to the note, when the woman approached the police station on April 14—the same day as Rajat Sharma’s engagement—her complaint was not registered despite her waiting for several hours. She alleged that political pressure was exerted on her to withdraw the complaint.

She further claimed that after details of the case became public, she was threatened and pressured to compromise through politicians, retired officials and police personnel, and was allegedly offered ₹50 lakh.

The woman reportedly wrote that repeated insults, threats and humiliation over several months had left her mentally shattered. In the note, she appealed for justice from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Speaking to NDTV, Shivpuri Superintendent of Police Aman Singh Rathore said an FIR had been registered in April under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on the woman’s complaint and that a chargesheet had already been filed.

He added that the case is pending before the court, the suicide note has been seized, and further legal action will be taken after the woman’s statement is recorded once her condition stabilises.
