Patna: A mob thrashed a man in Bihar over the alleged theft of a tractor, and he died. The man was put to torture through the bitterly cold night without minding that he was begging for mercy, NDTV reported, citing police accounts.
Officials said that two people were arrested over the gruesome incident.
The incident happened at the Yogiya village of Rajkhand North Panchayat in Muzaffarpur, some 70 km from Patna, the state capital. The victim was identified as Shambhu Sahni, who was with three others when he got encountered, but the others managed to escape.
Though Shambhu was rushed to hospital, he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
Disturbing pictures of the incident showed the man being tied with a rope to an auto rickshaw. His hands were tied as well, and they rested on his chest. There were hay fibres sticking to his face, and people were seen standing a few feet away.
The villagers say that Shambhu came there with three friends to steal the tractor. The villagers woke up to hear a loud sound and chased the three; Shambhu got caught.
Police said that the tractor owner, Ganga Sahni, and his nephew, Pukar Sahni, have been arrested and are named the main accused.
