Minister Nawab Malik seeks one-day bail to vote for Rajya Sabha elections

Mumbai: National Congress Party leader Nawab Malik has sent an appeal to the court requesting to grant him bail to cast vote for the 6 seats from the state in the Rajya Sabha elections. The Rajya Sabha elections will be held on June 10.

Apart from the Maharashtra Minister, the former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh who is jailed has also submitted a similar plea granting him bail for a day. Both the ministers are jailed under money laundering charges.

Nawab Malik in his appeal said that it is his duty as an elected member of the legislative assembly to cast vote for the desired candidate.

He was arrested on February 23 by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after finding out links in his activities with gangster Dawood Ibrahim.

There are 288 members this year from the Maharashtra assembly to submit votes for the election. The assembly has 25 MLAs who got elected either as independent candidates or from smaller political groups apart from BJP, Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena.

Union minister Piyush Goyal, Anil Bonde, and Dhananjay Mahadik are elected by the BJP. When NCP re-nominated Union Minister Praful Patel, Congress elected Imran Pratapgarhi. Nominees from Shiv Sena are Sanjay Pawar and Sanjay Raut.

The further hearing of the appeals will be held at a special court in Mumbai on June 8.
