Mehbooba Mufti, the chief of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has penned a letter to the Election Commission (EC), urging it to intervene and halt what she deems as the unlawful harassment and arrests of party workers.
In her letter to the EC, Mufti expressed grave concern over the purported actions of the state administration, which she alleges are being directed by the Union government.
She stated, "It has come to my attention that the state administration, under the control of the Union government, is shamelessly engaged in activities aimed at intimidating voters and supporters of the People's Democratic Party. I am deeply troubled by reports of security agencies conducting raids and harassing PDP workers in the Pulwama and Shopian districts. Numerous party members, sympathizers, and activists have been arbitrarily detained without justification, apparently as punishment for their efforts to organize public rallies and encourage voter turnout."
Mufti emphasized the crucial role of the EC in safeguarding the electoral process, stating, "As the custodian of democracy, the Election Commission plays a crucial role in upholding the integrity of the electoral process and ensuring a level playing field for all political parties. However, recent actions, such as the delay in the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, have raised serious concerns about the Commission's impartiality and emboldened those who seek to manipulate the electoral outcome through coercion and intimidation."
Furthermore, Mufti asserted that the situation has escalated to the extent where the security establishment is fostering a "climate of fear" in regions designated for elections on May 13. She drew parallels to past incidents, likening the current circumstances to the controversial 1987 elections, which resulted in significant disillusionment.
Mufti also criticized the imposition of Section 144 of the CrPC, which prohibits the assembly of people in politically active areas, describing it as "shocking and deeply concerning."
Expressing urgency, Mufti implored the poll body to take immediate and decisive action to prevent any attempts at election rigging and uphold the democratic values of the nation. She emphasized, "Through this urgent appeal, I seek not only to convey the apprehensions of my party but also to articulate the sentiments of the broader populace."
The PDP chief highlighted the electoral schedule in Jammu and Kashmir, noting that polling for various seats is ongoing. She concluded by urging the EC to address the issues raised and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
