New Delhi: Almost two months after a man urinated on a woman passenger onboard Air India flight, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has slapped Air India a fine of Rs 30 lakhs.
DGCA asked the director-in-flight services of Air India to pay a penalty of ₹ three lakh for "failing to discharge her duties".
As part of the strict action, the licence of the pilot-in-charge of its New York-Delhi flight has been suspended for three months, according to NDTV.
The accused Shankar Mishra faces a four-month flying ban for the urinating incident on November 26 last year.
Air India said in a statement today that it is strengthening flight crew’s awareness on its policies on handling unruly passengers.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reportedly took note of the incident on January 4.
After the peeing on the woman Shankar Mishra faced no action as he walked away.
The next day on November 27 the woman narrated in writing to the Air India group chairman about her experience.
However, Air India filed a complaint to police on January 4 attributing the delay to the belief that both sides “settled the matter”. The man was arrested by the Delhi Police two days later.
However, Shankar Mishra denied charges against him alleging that the woman "urinated on herself".
Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran earlier said Air India's response to the incident should have been "much swifter", according to NDTV.
Subsequently, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the airline was reviewing its "policy on service of alcohol in flight".
