Mamata Banerjee will take over Governor's Chancellor position

Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee administration in Bengal will amend a law to make the chief minister the Chancellor of all universities run by the state.

Mamata Banerjee's deft move follows Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar's questioning of the state government's appointments of vice-chancellors across universities, according to India Today.

The state cabinet on Thursday decide to divest the Governor of responsibilities of state-run universities.

In order for that to happen the government will have to amend an existing law gives the Governor the power over universities.

Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu stated the decision of the cabinet meeting on yesterday.

The Governor earlier said the government had appointed Vice Chancellors of 25 universities without Raj Bhavan's approval.

Bratya Basu said it was time to think whether colonial legacy of the Governor as the Chancellor of Universities should be continued.
