Mamata Banerjee removes Saayoni Ghosh, Mala Roy from key Trinamool posts

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has removed MPs Saayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy from key organisational positions in the party amid growing internal dissent following the party's defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Party sources said Jadavpur MP Saayoni Ghosh has been replaced as president of the Trinamool youth wing by youth leader Arnab Banerjee. Kolkata Dakshin MP Mala Roy has also been removed as president of the Trinamool Mahila Congress and replaced by Kaliganj MLA Alifa Ahmed.

The changes come just days after Banerjee had reappointed both leaders to their respective posts as part of a major organisational overhaul announced on June 5.

Both Ghosh and Roy are perceived to be part of a rebel group of Trinamool MPs in the Lok Sabha. The dissident faction plans to meet Speaker Om Birla on Monday and seek recognition as the "real TMC".

Rebel leaders claim that 20 of the party's 28 Lok Sabha MPs have signed a letter backing the move. The faction is being led by MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who has said the group would support the BJP-led NDA in Parliament if formally recognised.

Sources also indicated that senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay has joined the rebel camp, further deepening the crisis within the party.

A senior Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP said the decision to replace Ghosh and Roy had been taken at a party meeting held three days earlier.

In another organisational change, Kunal Ghosh has been appointed president of the party's North Kolkata organisational district, a post previously held by Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

Meanwhile, veteran parliamentarian Saugata Roy has been named chief advisor to the Trinamool's Lok Sabha wing, which currently comprises the MPs who continue to support Mamata Banerjee.

The developments come as the Trinamool Congress faces one of the most serious internal challenges in its history, with rebellions emerging in both the West Bengal Assembly and Parliament.
