New Delhi: After the third phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 on Tuesday, the Election Commission informed that in the 93 constituencies covered in the phase across 11 states and Union Territories, a considerable fall had been recorded in the voter turnout, just like the past two phases, in comparison to 2019 general elections, The Indian Express reported.
The voter turnout was 64.4 per cent as per the available figures by 11:40 pm on Tuesday, when it was 67.33 per cent in 2019.
Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest voter turnout of 57.34 against 60.01 in 2019. In the third phase, 10 constituencies went to polling in the state.
It was Assam that recorded the highest voter turnout, with 81.61 per cent in the phase when four seats went to polling, the Election Commission’s Voter Turnout App stated.
When Bihar’s five constituencies went to polls, 58.18 per cent voter turnout was recorded, while in Gujarat, 25 seats went to polls, recording 58.98 per cent polling. Voter turnout in Gujarat was 64.5 per cent in 2019, which is a massive drop.
Eleven Constituencies went to polls in Maharashtra, and voter turnout was 61.44 per cent there. Chhattisgarh had seven constituencies entering polls and recorded a turnout of 71.06 per cent, Goa had two constituencies, 75.20 per cent, and Karnataka had 14 constituencies, 70.14 per cent.
By the third phase, polling was completed in states such as Gujarat, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa and Karnataka, along with UTs such as Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu on Tuesday. The first two phases completed 14 states and UTs.
Further, the EC said that though voting time ended at 6 pm, polling was extended at some places to allow those who entered the station before 6 pm. The polling in the phase was peaceful, even in West Bengal, where poll-related violence is very frequent, the poll body informed.
In the first phase of the polls, 102 constituencies went to polls, and the final voter turnout was 66.14 per cent, which was a drop of a little under 4 percentage points to 2019. In the second phase, there were 88 constituencies, and the final turnout was 66.71 per cent, which was a 3 percentage point drop from 2019.
