Landslide takes at least 7 lives & injures 13 in Manipur

Guwahati: A severe landslide killed at least seven and injured 13 others in the Noney district of western Manipur. The unfortunate incident hit the Tupul yard railway construction camp on Wednesday night, NDTV reported.

Officials informed that most of those who lost lives were part of the territorial army, who were guarding a major railway line construction site.

Also, the landslide stopped the flow of the Ijei river, and there is fear that low-lying areas might get hit by the flood if the situation gets worse. Authorities have instructed locals to be cautious and not let children go near the river.

The national and state disaster management agencies were alerted for rescue and relief operations, while residents were warned of vulnerability due to continuous rains.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh called an emergency meeting, and he informed the same through Twitter. He said that the search and rescue operations are already going on, appealing to people to pay for those affected. He added that ambulance and medical teams were dispatched to the spot.

Further, people are asked to avoid National Highway-37, passing through the landslide-hit area, as multiple spots are blocked by landslides because of heavy rain for the past few days.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah talked with CM Biren and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the disaster.
