Known devil better than unknown saint: Congress MP on TMC in Goa

Urging the public to shun new political parties in the upcoming assembly polls, Goa Congress Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday said that a known devil is better than an unknown saint.

"Do not lie in Goa. Do not go by assurances. A known devil is better than an unknown one. A known devil is better than an unknown saint," Sardinha said, referring obliquely to the Trinamool Congress. The Trinamool Congress has made several pre-poll assurances, mostly targeted at women. This includes Rs 5000 per woman head of the household in the state. However, in West Bengal, the party only paid Rs 500, the former CM said.

"There are new parties in Goa. What have they done for Goa needs to be known. So far it is easy to say we will do it (fulfil assurances). Ask them what have they have done in their states?" Sardinha said.

Dismissing the charge of inconsistencies in promises in the two states, TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra said that every woman registered under the West Bengal government's Laxmi Bhandar scheme was entitled to Rs 500, while in Goa Rs 5000 shall be allotted to every woman head of household.

The TMC and the Congress are at loggerheads in the state for months now on which party is more capable of taking on the incumbent BJP in the upcoming assembly polls.
