Kerala Police investigate alleged disruption of Thrissur Pooram amid political controversy

The Kerala Police have launched an investigation into allegations of a deliberate disruption of the celebrated Thrissur Pooram held in April this year.

According to officials, the Thrissur East police registered the case after the Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by ADGP (Crime Branch) H. Venkatesh, submitted a detailed report.

The case was registered under multiple sections, including charges of conspiracy (Section 120B), acts intended to insult religious beliefs (Section 295A), and promoting enmity between groups based on religion and other grounds (Section 153A).

The SIT will be responsible for conducting the investigation.

Earlier this month, the Kerala government authorized a three-tier investigation following a report by the then ADGP (Law and Order), M.R. Ajith Kumar, who had submitted his findings to the State Police Chief in September. The alleged disturbance has stirred up a political debate in Kerala, with officials questioning the extent of the disruption and its impact on one of the state’s most significant cultural events.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan weighed in on the issue, asserting on Saturday that there had been no disruption to the Thrissur Pooram event. However, the controversy continues to generate significant discussion across the state.
