International sports complex, lion safari park among new projects in Rajkot

Rajkot: Gujarat’s Rajkot is set to undergo major urban development as part of the state government’s ‘Ease of Living’ initiative, with projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure, recreation, and quality of life for residents.

Key projects include an international-standard sports complex, a convention centre, modern housing, a water treatment plant, and a lion safari park. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has accelerated construction across the city, covering roads, bridges, and housing.

The sports complex, being developed in Ward No. 17, is designed to host international competitions such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. It will provide high-level training facilities and a competitive environment for athletes from Rajkot and the broader Saurashtra region.

Housing infrastructure is also being upgraded under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme, with 1,010 EWS-II units planned in the Railnagar area at a cost exceeding Rs 119 crore. The units will feature rooftop solar panels, water and drainage systems, gas connections, automated lifts, rainwater harvesting, DG sets, fire safety measures, children’s play areas, and integrated amenities such as anganwadi centres and shopping facilities.

Additional projects include a modern convention centre and a women’s hostel, the latter being constructed with a budget of Rs 49 crore to support working women in the city. Rajkot’s industrial significance, particularly in auto engineering and MSMEs, has influenced the prioritisation of these facilities.

Water infrastructure is also being expanded. A 50 MLD filter plant is planned at Nyara, along with an underground sump of 34.272 million litres and an associated pump house. In Madhapar, a 24.19 ML ground service reservoir and a 3 ML elevated reservoir are being developed at a cost of Rs 31.75 crore, with the pumping station now operational.

The Lion Safari Park is rapidly taking shape, with the construction of the compound wall, five-metre-high chain-link fencing, night shelters for animals, internal roads, and an inspection road outside the park completed. The park is expected to become a major recreational attraction for residents once finished.

Officials noted that these initiatives complement ongoing infrastructure projects, including Atal Sarovar, AIIMS, the international airport, and various flyovers, collectively contributing to improved urban living standards in Rajkot.
