‘India's PM will always be Hindu’: Himanta on Owaisi’s hijabi PM remark

New Delhi: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday said that a hijab-clad woman could one day become the Prime Minister of India, asserting that the Constitution guarantees equal opportunities to all citizens, irrespective of religion.

Addressing an election rally in Solapur, Maharashtra, Owaisi referred to Dr B R Ambedkar and said that India’s Constitution allows any citizen to occupy top constitutional posts, including those of Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or mayor. He contrasted India’s constitutional framework with that of Pakistan, claiming that the neighbouring country does not provide similar inclusivity for people of other religions.

“It is my dream that a day will come when a hijab-clad daughter becomes the Prime Minister of this country,” Owaisi said.

Reacting to the remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised Owaisi and asserted that India is a Hindu nation, expressing his belief that the country’s Prime Minister will always be a Hindu. However, Sarma also acknowledged that, constitutionally, there is no restriction preventing anyone from becoming the Prime Minister of India.
