New Delhi: India on Saturday recorded 84,332 new covid-19 cases, while the death toll remained high with 4002 fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry's database.
Although the coronavirus situation in India appears to be stabilizing as the country's daily covid cases fall below the 1 lakh mark for the fifth consecutive day after almost 2 months, the daily death toll crossing 4000 continues to remain alarming.
However, this is also the first time in more than two months that the daily cases went below the 90,000-mark. On Friday, 91,702 Covid-19 cases were recorded across the country.
The rise has been attributed to the backlog of cases from states like Maharashtra, which alone has reported 2,213 deaths.
Whereas, Tamil Nadu contributed 15,759 cases to the country's daily numbers. It was followed by neighbouring Kerala (14,233 cases) and Karnataka (8,249 cases).
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan on Thursday cautioned citizens to follow Covid appropriate behaviour and advised that the decrease in the number of Covid cases should never inculcate a sense of complacency.
On June 8, India recorded 86,498 cases, the lowest since April 2 when the country logged 89,129 new cases.
India's overall tally of Covid-19 cases now stands at 2,93,59,155 with 10,80,690 active cases and 3,67,081 deaths so far.
After battling a brutal second wave for weeks, fresh Covid cases came down below the three lakh mark for the first time on May 17 after touching a record high of 4,14,188 on May 7.
According to the Health Ministry, a total of 1,21,311 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the total discharge to 2,79,11,384 to date.
The Health Ministry said that a total of 24,96,00,304 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 34,33,763 who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.
The Indian Council of Medical Research has not yet given data as to how many tests were done in the last 24 hours, till the filing of this report.
