Indian chess prodigy beats world champion for the second time in three months

India's 16-year-old chess prodigy, R Praggnanandhaa, has defeated world champion, Magnus Carlsen, for the second time in a span of three months. The duo had competed against each other in February as well.

The teen prodigy played against the champion on Chessable Masters, a 16-player online rapid chess tournament, and got the better of him in the fifth round. The contest between them was headed towards a draw but Carlsen made a mistake on his 40th move.

Carlsen is currently in the third spot with 15 points and Praggnanandhaaa is in the fifth spot with 12 points. After two days of the tournament, China's Wei Yi is leading with 18 points and is closely followed by David Anton with 15 points.

Earlier this year, Praggnanandhaa defeated the Norwegian player in Airthings Masters online rapid tournament. He had become the youngest player ever to defeat current world champion, Magnus Carlsen. Praggnanandhaa is an Indian chess grandmaster and the fifth-youngest person to ever get the title. He earned the title of FIDE Master at the age of seven and won the Under-10 title two years later.

The young player has already won games against international grandmasters like Andrey Esipenko, Vidit Gujrathi, and Nils Grandelius. He is the youngest international master in history.

Carlsen is a chess grandmaster who is the reigning five-time World Chess Champion. He is also a three-time World Rapid Chess Champion and five-time World Blitz Chess Champion. The player has held the No. 1 position in the FIDE rankings since July 2011.
