During the first India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Meeting for Strategic Dialogue in Saudi Arabia, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Gaza remains India's "foremost concern."
He reiterated India’s principled stance, condemning terrorism and the loss of innocent lives, while advocating for an immediate ceasefire.
Jaishankar acknowledged the tragic toll of the 11-month conflict between Israel and Hamas, stating, "India supports a ceasefire as soon as possible." He underscored the importance of adhering to humanitarian law in responding to the situation and reiterated India’s longstanding support for a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue.
The minister highlighted India's contributions to Palestinian institution-building and humanitarian aid, particularly through increased support to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).
Reflecting on the broader India-GCC relationship, Jaishankar described the partnership as one rooted in history, culture, and shared values. He stressed the significant economic, energy, and defense ties between India and the GCC nations, with bilateral trade reaching $184.46 billion in the financial year 2022-23.
He proposed a framework based on "People, Prosperity, and Progress" to strengthen this relationship, noting the contributions of the nearly 9 million Indians living and working in GCC countries.
In a world marked by technological advancements and shifting geopolitics, Jaishankar expressed India’s commitment to deeper cooperation with the GCC, particularly in energy security, renewables, technology, and innovation. He emphasized the importance of mutual support in achieving national goals and addressing global challenges, from economic growth to environmental sustainability.
The minister concluded by urging both sides to use the platform to expand their collaboration and work towards a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future.
