India reports 14,623 Covid cases, 197 deaths in last 24 hours

India today logged 14,623 fresh COVID-19 cases, which is 12 per cent higher than yesterday. The country also reported 197 deaths over the last 24 hours. Overall, the cases and deaths have been on a decline.

Kerala remains among the top five states which registered the maximum number of Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. Kerala recorded 7,643 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 1,638 cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,179 cases, West Bengal with 726 cases and Mizoram with 665 cases.

As many as 81.04 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Kerala alone responsible for 52.27 per cent of the new cases.

Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (77), followed by Maharashtra with 49 daily deaths.

The country's active caseload (1,89,694) is 0.56 per cent of the overall cases logged since the start of the pandemic, the Health Ministry said. The active caseload is also the lowest in 221 days.

The daily positivity rate, which refers to the number of people testing positive out of every 100 tests, stood at 1.37 per cent on Monday- it has been less than 3 per cent for the last 49 days.

According to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday, the country saw a total of 19,446 discharges in the last 24 hours, taking the total recovery rate at around 98.15 per cent and total recoveries to 3,34,78,247.

Meanwhile, India is racing towards the 100-crore mark in Covid-19 vaccination. The country has so far (till Tuesday) administered more than 99 crore doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to Union Health Ministry's data. In fact, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros lauded the "mammoth efforts" undertaken by the Indian government for vaccination against Covid-19, informed Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.
