India records slight rise in Covid cases with 1,150 new infections

New Delhi: With 1,150 people testing positive for coronavirus infection in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,30,42,097, while the active cases increased to 11,558, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.

As many as four patients lost their lives in the past 24 hours. With this, the death count in the country has gone up to 5,21,751.

There has been a slight increase in the number of cases since yesterday, a rise of over 17 percent. An increase of 175 cases has been recorded in a span of 24 hours. On Saturday, India had recorded 975 new Covid cases.

Although India's overall COVID-19 cases remain low, though there has been an uptick in cases in the last week in several cities. Delhi, for example, is reporting rising COVID-19 cases among children in schools, which is a worrying sign.

India's top biomedical scientist Dr Gagandeep Kang said it is not known whether the XE variant is driving the rise in cases. "We don't necessarily know that all of the case that are being reported are of the XE variant unless we sequence them all," Dr Kang told NDTV today. "...It is only when we have all the pieces of the picture we can interpret data. People's data alone isn't sufficient," she said. 

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0.31 percent and the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 0.27 percent, the ministry said.

The total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered under the nationwide vaccination drive has exceeded 186.51 crores.

Meanwhile, Delhi on Saturday recorded 461 fresh Covid-19 cases and 2 deaths. A jump of nearly 26 per cent in the last 24 hours with a positivity rate of 5.33 per cent.
