India records 1,26,789 new COVID-19 Cases, highest single day spike in 2021

India registered a record single-day spike of 1,26,789 new COVID-19 cases, pushing its total infection tally to 1,29,28,574 cases,as updated by Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

According to the data updated at 8 am, the death toll has increased to 1,66,862, with 685 new fatalities being reported in a day.

Registering a steady increase for the 29th day in a row, the count of active cases in the country has gone up to 9,10,319, which is 7.04 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has dropped to 91.67 per cent, the report said.

PM Narendra Modi has called a meeting with all Chief Ministers on Thursday to discuss the further measures to be adopted to control the covid crisis situation. 

Meanwhile, In many parts of Maharashtra, including districts like Satara and Panvel, vaccination was briefly paused last evening as they were running out Over 100 vaccinations centres in Pune was shut due to vaccination shortage, as tweeted by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule.

Maharashtra is the worst pandemic -hit state in the country followed by the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

In view of rising cases, a night curfew has been imposed in Uttar Pradesh's capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and Prayagraj on Wednesday. Uttar Pradesh logged in 6,002 new cases, pushing its total caseload to over 6.45 lakh.

Punjab has also put up restrictions including night curfew across the state, up from the earlier12 districts. as state recorded 2,963 fresh COVID-19 cases taking total cases to over 2.6 lakh.
