India logs 10,126 new Covid cases, active caseload lowest in 266 days

As many as 10,126 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in the country in the last 24 hours, the lowest single-day rise in over 8 months, the Union Health ministry said on Tuesday.

With today's numbers, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases climbed to 3,43,77,113, while active caseload reached 1,40,638, which is the lowest in 263 days. The active cases account for less than 1% of total cases, currently at 0.41%, lowest since March 2020.

The death toll reached 4,61,389 with 332 fresh fatalities in the same time span. 

The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been below 20,000 for 32 straight days and less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 135 consecutive days now.

The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 5,404 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu with 841 cases, Mizoram with 730 cases, Maharashtra with 693 cases and West Bengal with 603 cases.

Atleast 81.68 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Kerala alone responsible for 53.37 per cent of the new cases.

Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala (262), followed by Maharashtra with 15 daily deaths.

India has administered a total of 59,08,440 doses in the last 24 hours, which brings the total tally of doses administered to 1,09,08,16,356.

A total of 10,85,848 samples were tested in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, India's homegrown Covaxin, which got the WHO approval last week, has been recognised by the United Kingdom. No quarantine is required for fully vaccinated travellers in Britain as part of new rules effective from November 22.

The country has given 109 crore doses of vaccines since the start of the pandemic. However, in the last few weeks, the pace of vaccination has slowed down.

In India, COVID-19 cases passed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19, a report by news agency PTI says, citing official data.
