Income tax department serves notice to rickshaw puller to pay 3 crores

After being served an Income Tax notice asking him to pay over Rs 3 crores, Pratap Singh, a rickshaw puller from Amar Colony in Bakalpur area in Mathura, approached the police on Sunday claiming fraud.

Though no case has been registered on Singh's complaint, the police will look into the matter, said Station House Officer (SHO) Anuj Kumar.

Singh also uploaded a video on social media explaining the sequence of events. On March 15, he had applied for a PAN card at the Jan Suvidha Kendra in Bakalpur as his bank had requested him to submit it. He received a coloured photocopy of the PAN card from one Sanjai Singh of Bakalpur. The rickshaw puller explained that he could not differentiate between an original PAN card and a coloured photocopy as he was illiterate. He further had to run between pillar to post for about three months to get his PAN card.

He then received a call from IT officials on October 19 and was served a notice asking him to pay Rs 3,47,54,896.

He claims that someone had impersonated him and obtained a GST number on his name for running a business. The turnover of the trader for 2018-19 was Rs 43,44,36,201.
