In Delhi's Jahangirpuri, a boy collects coins from the father's destroyed shop

New Delhi : A photo showing a boy finding piles of rubble from rubble in Jahangirpuri in Delhi, where bulldozers demolished a structure, was widely shared online. The boy, who is thought to be eight, was also able to find some tetra packs from his father's demolished juice shop.

Various social media platforms have posted the photo, which has been tagged with the handles of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, and the Delhi Police.

Bulldozers were dispatched to Jahangirpuri in northern Delhi on Wednesday, days after communal violence erupted there. They tore down several concrete and temporary structures as part of a drive against encroachment.

Several shops were torn down during the operation, which lasted about two hours.

NDMC bulldozers razed a vendor's shop in the area. According to him, the DDA granted him the shop in 1977. However, no one listened to his pleas to keep it.

In response to a petition filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind alleging buildings of Muslim riots accused were razed, the Supreme Court intervened twice in order to stop the drive.

Despite an order by the top court to maintain the status quo, demolition continued.

Even after the NDMC mayor was notified of the court's order, the demolition was still carried out.

The Supreme Court later ordered a two-week-long stay on the demolition drive.

According to the NDMC, the demolition drive was executed following an order by the Delhi High Court. However, after the Supreme Court intervened, the civic body's mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said they will not conduct the anti encroachment drive in Jahangirpuri.

The official, however, asserted that anti-encroachment drives will continue in other areas in which it has jurisdiction.
