Mumbai: The inquiry committee set up by IIT Bombay to probe the death of student Darshan Solanki said caste-based discrimination did not play a role. The alleged suicide happened last month and student groups had claimed he suffered experiences associated with discrimination.
The 12-member committee headed by the HOD of the chemistry department Professor Nand Kishore hinted at deteriorating academic performance as a possible cause. However, his family also claimed that he faced discrimination for belonging to a Scheduled Caste.
The Maharashtra government also formed a special investigation team to look into the young student's death.
Solanki was an 18-year-old first-year student of B.Tech (chemical course). He was from Ahmedabad. On February 12, he allegedly jumped from the seventh floor of the hostel.
