New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh police and sought reports on the killing of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf.
The Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh and the Commissioner of Police of Prayagraj are expected to submit reports within four weeks. "The reports should cover all the aspects leading to the killings, copies of medical-legal certificates of the dead, inquest report, post-mortem report, video cassette/CD of the post-mortem examination, site plan of the scene of occurrence of the crime, chemical and histopathology examination, the final cause of death based on the FSL report, and magisterial enquiry report," said the notice.
The murder happened when the gangster politician and his brother were being escorted by the police to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup. They were shod dead at point-blank by three men posing as journalists during a media interaction. Locals alleged that the police were involved in the planned encounter.
Both Atiq and his brother were in handcuffs and in full view of camera crews when they were shot at. They were brought to Prayagraj from Gujarat and Bareilly prisons for interrogation in connection with the killing of Umesh Pal and his two police security guards earlier this year. The last rites of Atiq Ahmad's son Asad were performed in Prayagraj just hours before the shooting. He was killed in a police encounter on April 13.
