New Delhi: Air conditioner is inevitable in summer when mercury melts to the point where it is unbearable.
Many believe that it is not all right to spend long hours in an air-conditioned room.
It is here the explanation by Dr Satish C Reddy Consultant Pulmonologist at CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad, on its benefits and drawbacks become relevant, according to The Indian Express.
Dr Reddy points out that AC systems could help ward off heat related health risks like heat stroke and dehydration during hot weather.
AC conditioners today come with filters that can remove dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
This could improve indoor air quality cutting down the risk of respiratory issues, Dr Reddy added.
More important, these systems can reduce humidity alongside filtering out allergens, alleviating symptoms of allergies or asthma.
However, spending long hours in AC can cause issues including dehydration requiring people to drink plenty of fluids.
Exposure to AC could dry the skin while causing itchy eyes along with irritating mucous membrane and weakening immune system making you prone to catch cold frequently.
Reparatory issues can trigger if AC units are properly maintained leading to mold and allergens.
Lot of people who spent hours in AC rooms could develop muscle and joint stiffness, as they do not move around much.
As your body get accustomed to AC rooms it is hard for you to cope with natural temperature variations, according to the report.
