Heavy rains: Karnataka CM to meet district authorities

Bengaluru: After severe showers affected many some districts in Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has decided on a video conference with Deputy Commissioners and other senior officers of those districts on Saturday, IANS reported.

The conference was planned virtual because the CM was put under isolation after he tested Covid-19 positive.

He will chair the meeting from his residence at RT Nagar and is planning to seek details of the damages caused by the continuous rains and issue directions for rescue and relief measures/.

The DCs of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Hassan, Mandya, Mysuru, Davangere, Tumakuru, Ramnagar, Yadgir, Koppala, Haveri, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Gadag and Chikkamagaluru would attend the meeting.

In the early hours of Saturday, a three-storied building had collapsed Chikkapet locality, a busy area of Bengaluru. However, no casualties have been reported so far.

Local authorities have evacuated more than ten families after landslides. Heavy rains continue lashing the Bhatkal region, where the CM had paid a visit recently to take stock of the situation.

In the meantime, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy rains for 24 Karnataka districts on Saturday. When red alerts were issued in six districts, 11 received orange, and another ten received yellow.
