Thiruvananthapuram/Mumbai: India Meteorological Department predicts heavy rain in nine districts of Kerala on Monday. The weather office issued a Yellow alert in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Center has warned that there is a possibility of swell waves resulting in high waves on the Kerala coast till 11.30 pm on Monday night. Fishing has been prohibited in the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts till the 13th.
In another news from Mumbai, two people were killed after a portion of their house crashed in heavy rains that washed down the city last night. One of the victims is a minor, IANS reported.
The deceased were identified as Nagesh R Reddy, aged 38, and Rohit Reddy, aged 10.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Disaster Control said that the incident happened to a five-storied building under construction around 11:15 pm on Sunday night. Eyewitnesses told the Mumbai Fire Brigade that some portion of the parapet (iron beam) and a slab of one of the floors had fallen. A part of the broken section was seen hanging precariously, and a fireman removed it using rescue tools.
The two victims were collected from the debris by those who arrived there first and were rushed to hospital. However, they were declared dead. The deceased were taken to the hospital in a private vehicle before the rescue teams arrived.
Search is still going on, and more people might be trapped beneath the rubble.
