A division bench comprising Justices A.Y. Kogje and Samir Dave dismissed all appeals challenging the special court's verdict and confirmed the sentences awarded to members of the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM).
The serial blasts took place on July 26, 2008, when 21 bombs exploded across Ahmedabad within a span of 70 minutes. The coordinated attacks killed 56 people, injured over 200 others, and also targeted hospitals in the city, where many of the blast victims had been taken for treatment.
In 2022, a special court sentenced 38 Indian Mujahideen members to death, describing the case as falling within the "rarest of rare" category. Eleven other convicts were awarded life imprisonment.
With Tuesday's judgment, the Gujarat High Court has upheld the special court's verdict in its entirety, confirming both the death sentences and the life terms awarded to the convicts.
