Grenade attack on Army base in Pathankot

An alert has been sounded at the Indian Army cantonement in Punjab's Pathankot after unidentified assailants hurled a hand grenade into the compound late on Sunday night. No injuries have been reported after the initial blast although security officials have begun investigating the matter.

CCTV footage shows two masked men on a motorcycle Hurling the grenade past the Triveni gate of the Army compound at around 9 PM on Sunday evening. The Army has initiated a search operation for the suspects after an alarm was sounded.

"The hand grenade attack took place close to 9 p.m. on Sunday night near the Triveni gate of the Army's cantonment. There has been no casualty. We are screening the CCTV images. So far, no arrest has been made and investigations are under way," Sudrinder Lamba, Senior Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu.

Security has also been beefed up in Pathankot and neighbouring areas following the attack as the Army wishes to keep on alert in case of any other such incidents, he said. The alert comes after a similar incident in 2016 where heavily-armed terrorists assaulted the Pathankot Air Force base and killed three security officers in the ensuing battle.
