Goa Police register unnatural death case following Nana Patekar’s death

Panaji: Goa Police have registered an Unnatural Death (UD) case following the death of Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, as authorities begin examining the circumstances surrounding his demise.

The case was registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and is being investigated by Police Sub-Inspector Nitin Naik.

According to police sources, Patekar was taken from his residence in Dona Paula to Manipal Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

As part of the inquiry, police will prepare a panchnama, examine the post-mortem findings from Goa Medical College and record statements from the actor’s family members and other people who may have information about the incident.

The UD case is a standard legal procedure in deaths requiring official examination. If the investigation establishes that Patekar died of natural causes, the case could be closed. However, police may initiate further legal action if they find evidence of foul play or other suspicious circumstances.

Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital had told reporters on Thursday morning that medical staff had attempted to revive the actor after he was brought to the hospital.

“We tried our best here, but he was brought dead, and then we had to file a police case,” the doctor said.

He added that Patekar was known to have a heart condition and was taking medication.

The actor reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest at his Goa residence early on Thursday. Doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for nearly 45 minutes, but he was declared dead at 5.20 a.m.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at Goa Medical College on Thursday morning. The body was later handed over to the family for the last rites.

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, Nana Patekar came from a Marathi family. His father, Gajanan, also known as Dinkar Patekar, was a textile painter and businessman who died when the actor was 28.

His mother, Nirmala Patekar, also known as Sanjanabai Patekar, was a homemaker. She remained with the actor until her death on January 29, 2019, at the age of 99.
