New Delhi: India’s digital payment system UPI is widely popular across the world with many countries showing interest in it.
However, few outsiders have direct experience of how it is working even for village vegetable vendors.
Germany's Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Volker Wissing has given it a try in Bengaluru and is a fan of it, according to NDTV.
German Embassy in India on Sunday took to X, formerly Twitter to praise India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payment system, calling it ‘one of the country's success stories’.
The instant payment system that enables transferring of money from one bank account to another using mobile number was introduced on August 25, 2016.
The payment system has since been widely used across India even in street shopping without customers having to use paper money.
The German embassy posted videos and image of Wissingm, who was in Bengaluru to attend the G20 Digital Ministers Meeting, buying groceries and paying on UPI.
The post ran with a caption, ‘One of India's success story is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everybody to make transactions in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport @Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments first hand and is very fascinated!’
Social media users quickly reacted to German embassy’s post, thanking Wissign for trying out UPI.
One user said ‘Thank you for being part of India's digital economic revolution. Keep sharing and using.’
The countries including Sri Lanka, France, UAE, and Singapore have showed interest in India’s digital payment system. During Prime Minister Modi’s visit in July, France agreed to use UPI payment system in the country.
